  • 2013

30 December 2013: The RGC-CRF project "Super-resolution imaging: revealing the molecular organization of subcellular organelles" was funded (HKUST12/CRF/13G).

23 November 2013: Shanchao ZHANG received 2013 Young Scientist Award (Physical / Mathematical science) from Hong Kong Institution of Science. Shanchao also received the Best Poster Award at the 21st Annual Conference of Hong Kong Institution of Science. Congratulations! [HKUST Press Release]

26 October - 08 November 2013: We moved to our new lab 4137.

13 September 2013: The work "Oxygen-assisted charge transfer between ZnO quantum dots and graphene", collaborated with Prof. Ning Wang's group, was published in Small [Small 9, 3031 (2013)] and selected as the journal Frontispiece [Small 9, 3030 (2013)].

19 August 2013: Chi Ho FU, Ying WANG, and Xianxin GUO joined the group as postgraduate students.

12 August 2013: Jiefei and Peng got married today. Congratulations to the new couple!

07 August 2013: Shanchao passed his PhD final defense. Congratulations to Dr. ZHANG!

17 July 2013: Wenhao passed his PhD final defense. Congratulations to  Dr. GUO!

July 2013: The book "Optical Precursors: From Classical Waves to Single Photons" was published by Springer [Link].

July 2013: Prof. DU received the RGC-GRF (2013/2014) research grant (HKUST601113).

31 May 2013: The work "Efficient direct evaporative cooling in an atom chip magnetic trap", collaborated with Prof. Dana Z. Anderson's group at  Physics and JILA at CU-Boulder, was published in Physical Review A. This is the first experimental demonstration of directed forced evaporative cooling in an atom chip magnetic trap proposed by Prof. Du and his collaborator (Eun Oh) in 2009.

22 May 2013: Shreyans MEHTA and Abani Shankar NAYAK joined the group as summer visiting internship students from IIT, Delhi, India.

08 May 2013: Chi SHU joined the group as an undergraduate students.

03 May 2013: Quan LIU joined the group as a research assistant.

10 April 2013: The work "Differential-phase-shift quantum key distribution using heralded narrow-band single photons" was published in Optics Express. [Accepted on 06 April 2013]

08 April 2013: Chi Ho FU joined the group as an undergraduate student.

19 March 2013: The work "Estimating atomic sizes with Raman spectroscopy", collaborated with Prof. Zikang Tang's group, was published in Scientific Reports.

21 February 2013: The work "Coherent optical memory with high storage efficiency and large fractional delay", collaborated  with Prof. Ite A. Yu's group at National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan), was published in Physical Review Letters. [Accepted on 18 January 2013]

22 January 2013: The work "Oxygen-assisted charge transfer between ZnO quantum dots and graphene", collaborated with Prof. Ning Wang's group, was accept by Small.

01 January 2013: Prof. Du was promoted to Associate Professor with substantiation.

  • 2012

27 December 2012: The work "Coherent control of single photon absorption and remission in a two-level atomic ensemble" was published in Physical Review Letters. [Accepted on 30 November 2012]

06 December 2012: Shanchao ZHANG received the Young Scientist Award from the School of Science, HKUST. Congratulations!

October 2012: The work "Piezotronic effects on the optical properties of ZnO nanowires", collaborated with Prof. Ning Wang's group, was published in Nano Letters. [Accepted on 11 October 2012]

10 October 2012: The new lab room 6250A is ready to home the super-resolution bio-imaging project. This is a collaborative project, directed by Prof. Michael Loy, involving Department of Physics, Division of Life Science, and Department of Chemistry. The optical table was delivered and installed today.

09 October 2012: Our work "Optimal storage and retrieval of single-photon waveforms" was published in Optics Express. [Accepted on 29 September 2012]

26 September 2012: Teng ZHAO joined the group as a postgraduate student.

16 August 2012: Luwei ZHAO joined the group as a postgraduate student.

15 June 2012: Dr. Peng CHEN Joined the group as a postdoctoral researcher.

15 February 2012: Kexin YI joined the group.

February 2012: Jiefei moved to Shanghai and started her professor position at the East China Normal University.

February 2012: Shuyu moved to Israel and worked as a postdoc at Ben-Gurion Universtiy.

14 February 2012: Our work "Two-photon interferences with degenerate and nondegenerate paired photons" was published in Physical Review A as a Rapid Communication .

16 June 2011: "Optical Precursor of a Single Photon" (accepted on 26 May 2011) was published in Physical Review Letters 106, 243602 (2011). It was selected as Editor's Suggestion and highlighted as APS Physics Synopsis: Single photons obey the speed limits.

12-16 June 2011: Prof. DU attended the OSA Advanced Photonics Congress: Slow and Fast Light (SL) Meeting at Toronto Canada and presented the work "Optical Precursors in Slow and Fast Light Media".

01-06 May 2011: CLEO 2011 at Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Shangchao presented a poster "Generation of Narrowband Hyperentangled Biphotons" at the conference. Prof. DU preside at the session of Quantum Measurement and Metrology (QTuJ) 13:45-15:30 on 03 May. (Shanchao, Prof. DU, Prof. LOY, and Prof. WONG attended the conference.)

April 2011: Shuyuan accepted the admission offer from the Columbia University Physics Department. Congratulations to Shuyuan!

08 March 2011: "Atomic-Resonance-Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Frequency Conversion with Entangled Photon Pairs" was published on Physical Review A 83, 033807 (2011).

21 May 2010: Prof. DU presented our research work of optical precursors at the CLEO/QELS 2010 conference at San Jose, USA. (Jiefei, Prof. DU and Prof. LOY attended the conference.)

06 May 2010: "Shaping Biphoton Temporal Waveforms with Modulated Classical Fields" was published on Physical Review Letters 104, 183604 (2010). [accepted on 14 April 2010]

26 April 2010: Shuyuan WANG won the Paul and May Chu Undergraduate Student Research Award 2010. Congratulations to Shuyuan!

 26 March 2010: "Optical Coherent Transients in Cold Atoms: From Free-Induction Decay to Optical Precursors" was published on Physical Review A 81, 033844 (2010).

31 August 2009: Dr. Dong WEI left the group and now works at the College of Physics and Electronics Engineering, Shanxi University.

28 August 2009: "Optical Precursors with EIT in Cold atoms" was published on PRL 103, 093602 as Editors' suggestion. This was the first published experimental work of the group. [See also HKUST Physics News] [Campus E-Board News]

July 2009: Prof. DU received the RGC-GRF (2009/2010) research grant (HKUST600809).

10 April 2009: The theoritical proposal "Temporally Shaping Biphoton Wave Packets with Periodically Modulated Driving Fields" was published on PRA 79, 043811.

30 March 2009: The first 2D Rb85 MOT was created! It was also the first cold atom source in Hong Kong.

01 February 2009: Jiefei CHEN joined the group officially as the first PhD graduate student of the group.

08 January 2009: "Three-Wire Magnetic Trap for Direct Forced Evaporative Cooling" was published on PRA 79, 013407.

  • 2008

25 September 2008: "Narrowband Biphoton Generation near Atomic Resonance" was published on JOSAB 25, C98.
